Gay Blackpool 2018
Blackpool’s gay village is between the town centre to its east and the beach to its west. I swear the word ‘tacky’ was invented to describe Blackpool. Yet, as tacky as it is, it is still the UK’s top seaside destination, so it must have something!
In its heyday 1900–1950, Blackpool thrived as the factory workers of Northern England took their annual holidays there in huge numbers. Those wonderful photos we’ve all seen from that era, show crowds of tourists on the beach and promenade. Blackpool was also a preferred destination of visitors from Glasgow and remains so to this day. The town went into decline from its heyday, when cheap air travel arrived in the 1960s and many started going to equally tacky but sunny and warm Benidorm. These days, most visit Blackpool for a weekend, rather than for a week, as in bygone years.
